Introduction to Air Traffic Management

Course Rationale
As the demand for CAASD services evolves, CAASD is going beyond its traditional focus of Air Traffic Management and taking on a larger role in the safe, secure, efficient and effective management of air transportation. New employees joining CAASD often come from non-aviation disciplines. In order for these employees to begin to contribute in their new positions as quickly as possible, it is necessary to provide them with an overview of the air traffic management system, including its origins, structure and operations. New CAASD staff also need to understand the challenges facing today's air transportation system, such as aviation safety and security and unmanned aerial systems, the initiatives underway to meet these challenges, and the role of CAASD in analyzing, developing and fielding new technologies and procedures around the world.
Course Description
Although this overview course is principally intended to orient new CAASD employees, it is open to all MITRE staff who would like to increase or refresh their knowledge of air transportation management. This course is also open to the aviation community (which includes government, industry and stakeholders) as MITRE carries the obligation to serve the interest of advancing safe, secure, efficient and effective air transportation. After reviewing the origins and evolution of the ATM system, the course discusses users' current procedures and technologies (dispatchers, pilots, military and unmanned aerial systems), the challenges facing today's system (such as traffic flow management roles and responsibilities and systems), and the need and mechanism for transformation. The course also examines key emerging technologies and procedures that are being developed to meet the need for airspace management, increased capacity with increased aviation safety and security. In addition to these technical topics, the CAASD Senior Management Team (SMT) will discuss CAASD's International work program and relationship with the FAA. A variety of audio visual and selected CAASD laboratory, simulation and analysis tools will be used to supplement briefings, and interaction among speakers and the class is encouraged.
