Q: What is the MITRE Corporation?
A. MITRE is a not-for-profit corporation working in the public interest. MITRE operates three Federally Funded Research and Development Centers (FFRDCs). One performs systems engineering and integration work for the Department of Defense. A second provides strategic, technical and program management advice to the Treasury Department and the Internal Revenue Service.  A third performs systems research and development work for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and other civil aviation authorities.  

Q: What Is an FFRDC?
A: A Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) is a unique organization that is sponsored by a federal agency of the United States.  It assists the government with scientific research,  analysis and systems development and acquisition. FFRDCs bring together the expertise and outlook of government, industry and academia to solve complex technical problems that cannot be solved by any one group.   

Q: What is CAASD? 
A:
CAASD is the Center for Advanced Aviation System Development, the designated FFRDC for the FAA. CAASD serves the public interest by advancing the safety, effectiveness and efficiency of aviation in the United States and around the world by conducting a continuing program of research, development and engineering in collaboration with the aviation community.   

Q: What is the MITRE Aviation Institute (MAI)? 
A:
The MAI is an education and knowledge management organization within CAASD. The MAI draws on 40 years of MITRE's corporate knowledge to help the FAA and the worldwide aviation community meet current and future challenges.   

Q: Who teaches for the MITRE Aviation Institute? 
A:
Subject matter experts are drawn from across CAASD, MITRE and the broader aviation community.   

Q: Is the MAI accredited?
A:
The MAI partners with various professional organizations and universities through which accreditation may be attained.  

Q: What are these organizations and universities?
A:
Air Traffic Control Association (ATCA), American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE), NavCanada, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, George Washington University, and others.  

Q: What is the cost of MAI instructional programs? 
A:
Costs vary according to venue and the staff required to deliver the desired scope of instruction.

Q: What subject areas are covered by the the MAI? 
A:
Core subject areas include Communications, Navigation, and Surveillance/Air Traffic Management (CNS/ATM); Airspace Planning and Analysis; Airport Planning and Operations; Aviation Safety and Security.

A:
