Aviation SMS Audit Course (1 day)

SMS Audit furthers the principles and skills acquired by participants from experience or past courses taken. Participants will receive an increased exposure to SMS, going beyond theory and principles to learning how to conduct an SMS audit that evaluates the effectiveness of the organization's SMS. The SMS Audit course is designed to train auditors to perform SMS Auditing tasks.

This one-day course is conducted using lectures on SMS Auditing and a hands-on, classroom-simulated SMS Audit exercise that mirrors an actual SMS Audit. Students will learn through role playing, the roles and responsibilities of both the SMS Audit leader and the SMS Audit team members. Additionally, students will learn the responsibilities of the audited facility in regard to preparing for, and communicating with, the SMS Audit team.

A very important part of the Auditing course will be the discussion surrounding compliance versus effectiveness measurement of the SMS. Once investing resources to implement SMS in your company, the question most often asked is how are we doing? Effectiveness of the SMS answers this question. The world is now searching for the vehicle to measure effectiveness. This SMS Auditing course discusses some of the initial ways to measure SMS effectiveness.

SMS Audit Curriculum:

Module 1: Protocol and Structure of an SMS Audit
The objectives of this module are:
  1. Definitions of Audit
  2. ICAO's Universal Oversight Audit Program (USOAP)
  3. Sate Safety Program's (SSP) Regulatory Safety Audit
  4. Self Audits
  5. Who Audits Who
  6. Four Distinct Phases of the Audit

Module 2: Community Safety Programs
The objectives of this module are:

  1. The European Aviation Safety Agency
  2. The Regulatory Authority for Participating States

Module 3: SMS Auditing Compliance
The objectives of this module are:

  1. The Compliance Audit
  2. ICAO SARPS
  3. A Balance of Compliance and Safety

Module 4: SMS Auditing, Effectiveness of the Service Providers (SP) SMS
The objectives of this module are:

  1. The Effectiveness Audit
  2. Assessment of the Safety Culture
  3. Safety Culture Surveys
  4. The ICAO SMS Framework
  5. Transport Canada's System Based Approach to Effectiveness Auditing

Module 5: SMS Auditing Exercise
The objectives of this module are:

  1. The Development of an Effectiveness Measurement for SMS
  2. Discussion of Indicators of Safety Health
